Google Hangouts will be permanently shut down this year • The Register

Google is ending its Hangouts messaging app before it officially shuts down in November, the web giant announced on Monday.

Users of the mobile app will see a pop-up asking them to move their conversations to Google Chat, which is yet another of its online services. It can be accessed through Gmail as well as its own standalone app. Next month, conversations from the web version of Hangouts will migrate to Chat in Gmail.

Google encouraged people to download their data using Google Takeout if they wanted to keep it before Hangouts is no longer available in November 2022.

“The move to Google Chat opens up new and better ways to connect and collaborate,” product manager Ravi Kanneganti said in a blog post. “For example, users can edit documents, slides, or sheets with side-by-side editing, making it easy to collaborate while keeping the conversation going.

Google launches the last application that it will cancel in a few years: Hangouts Chat

FROM 2018

“Google Chat also includes Spaces, a space dedicated to topical collaboration. Groups and teams can share ideas, work on documents, and manage files and tasks, all from one place. Plus, Gmail’s new built-in view makes it easier to use Chat with your Gmail, Spaces, and Meet inbox.”

The search titan is consolidating these services, from Google Chat to Google Docs and Meet, into a single platform for Gmail users. They’re also available to enterprise customers as Google Workspace, which supports accounts with personalized email addresses and cloud computing capabilities.

Google Hangouts was designed as a cross-platform instant messaging app for its now-defunct Google+ social networking platform. In 2013, it was created as a separate app, but failed to gain much exposure compared to alternatives such as WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and Telegram.

Google began transitioning Workspace customers to Meet and Chat from Hangouts in 2020. Gmail users were also told to make the switch last year before Hangouts was permanently discontinued. Chat will be Google’s dominant messaging platform in the future. Google said it will integrate more features, allowing users to make direct calls, start online threads in Spaces, and share and view multiple images.
